Lines and Veils Submitted by Players
Howdy,
I deeply value having safety tools involved in my games (especially with new players that are unfamiliar with my table and I’m unfamiliar with). I currently talk about them in my game templates, elaborate more in my DM style, explain them in detail in a code of conduct form (where players can submit their own lines and veils), and go over all of it verbally at the top of each game, while showing a palette document.
All that said, I think there should be more involvement on the Startplaying side to normalize their usage and make them easier to be disclosed by players (possibly even anonymously). I think there should be a way for players to submit their lines and veils through Startplaying’s website when joining a game and/or a consent checklist that DMs are required to provide that the players have to agree to.
This will every player an opportunity to disclose their soft limits and hard limits to a DM, regardless of if that DM is experienced in using safety tools. It also will give players space to disclose them confidentially to the DM without having to talk about it in front of other players (I already do this through my code of conduct, but think an integrated system would be better). This also will ensure that every DM will be able to go into a game knowing that they are aware of any potentially dangerous or triggering topics for their players, which can be essential for player/DM safety as well as helping to prevent bad experiences and reviews for DMs.
Long and short, safety tools (specifically lines and veils) should be integrated into the Startplaying platform to both normalize their usage and ensure safe communication and play.
